Carlos Alcaraz was forced to withdraw from the ATP Finals and the Davis Cup Finals after sustaining an injury at the Paris Masters.

Only a few days ago, Alcaraz arrived in the French capital for the last ATP Masters 1000 event of the year, and he was hoping to end the season with success.

First, his participation was in doubt because of a knee issue. However, the young Spaniard was soon cleared by doctors and participated at the 2022 Paris Masters.

He made it to the quarter-finals, where he was forced to retire during a second-set tie-break against Holger Rune, who will play the final in Paris.

After the match, he revealed that he had a problem with his abdomen, and that was soon confirmed also by his medical team.

A few hours after retiring from the Paris Masters quarter-finals, Alcaraz announced that he would not compete in this year's ATP Finals and Davis Cup Finals.

"After my withdrawal yesterday and having been evaluated by my medical team, unfortunately this is the result of my injury: an internal oblique muscle tear in the left abdominal wall with an estimated recovery time of six weeks."
"Unfortunately I won't make the ATP Finals or the Davis Cup Finals. It is tough and painful for me to miss these two events, which are so important to me, but all I can do is be positive and focus on my recovery. Thank you for the support!"

Alcaraz can still finish the season as the World No. 1 player in the ATP Rankings. To do that, he will need Rafael Nadal to earn less than 1,000 points or Stefanos Tsitsipas not to win the ATP Finals.

Taylor Fritz will replace the young Spaniard at the 2022 ATP Finals. As a result, Hubert Hurkacz and Holger Rune will now be the first two alternates.
