Leylah Fernandez injured her foot at the 2022 Roland Garros in a loss to Martina Trevisan, and the Canadian had to undergo surgery because of the injury.
The 19-year-old is one of the biggest talents on the WTA Tour, and she proved it only recently with a final run at the 2021 US Open. She lost in the final of the tournament to an inspired Emma Raducanu, but Fernandez's qualities are undeniable.
Since her final appearance at Flushing Meadows, the Canadian was trying to prove that it was not a fluke, and she succeeded at some events. Most notably, Fernandez won the 2022 Monterrey Open, and had a good run at the 2022 Roland Garros, but it was during that run that she injured herself.
Since then, it's been a slow recovery, with Fernandez recently posting a video of herself practicing tennis. But it was not a proper tennis practice yet as her foot has not healed yet. Fernandez is hoping to return in time for the North American swing in August.
In the video, Fernandez is seen hitting the tennis ball against a wall, still with a brace on her foot. It's good to see her doing what she loves doing best, but it's still unfortunate to see her foot wrapped as it means that she's still quite away from proper practice.
The Canadian also saw the funny side of things. Since the best of the best are currently battling it out at Wimbledon, between June 27th and July 10th, Fernandez admitted that while she's physically present at home, her head is at Wimbledon, where she would compete if it wasn't for the injury.
"Physically home, mentally at Wimbledon."
As of now, it's very difficult to predict where she'll make a comeback, but with one of a very few home tournaments around the corner, Fernandez would certainly love to compete at the WTA 1000 event in Toronto - the 2022 Canadian Open.
