Big changes in this special rank. Iga Swiatek is still the #1 by earnings in 2022. Alcaraz is now #2, followed by Nadal (#3), Jabeur (#4) and Ruud (#5). Three men, two women.
Iga Swiatek's triumph at the US Open allowed the Pole to remain the highest-earning player on the ATP or WTA Tour in 2022.
Swiatek held the top spot before the year's Grand Slam began. She had a 37-match winning streak from the Qatar Open until finally losing against Alize Cornet in the third round of Wimbledon in July
The WTA world No. 1 secured six titles during that incredible winning streak: the Qatar Open, Indian Wells Open, Miami Open, Stuttgart Open, Italian Open, and the French Open. It was one of the best runs in tennis history.
Those titles are the most significant reason for Swiatek being at No. 1 on the prize money list before the US Open. Being at the top is even more impressive considering the disadvantages female players face compared to men when attempting to finish top for prize money earned.
While the Grand Slams and some Masters 1000 tournaments have equal prize money, other WTA events throughout the season do not offer as much financial reward as ATP tournaments.
Kim Clijsters, in 2003, was the last woman to finish top of the prize money list. But Swiatek is in a great position to be the first woman in 19 years to achieve this after winning the US Open. She was surprised with tiramisu after that achievement.
The mammoth $2.6 million Swiatek received for winning the women's singles at Flushing Meadows takes her total to $9.24 million. Alcaraz, who won his maiden Grand Slam title in the men's singles at the US Open is No. 2 on the list with $7.36 million.
Rafael Nadal, this year's Australian Open and French Open champion, sits at No. 3 on %6.69 million. The Spaniard was beaten in four sets in the fourth round of the US Open.
Ons Jabeur, who became the second player to qualify for the WTA Finals, is No. 4 with $4.75 million, while French Open and US Open runner-up Casper Ruud is No. 5 with $4.63 million.
