Felix Auger-Aliassime was able to win the crucial doubles match with Vasek Pospisil to win the first tie for Canada at the 2022 Davis Cup Finals.
Alongside Pospisil, Auger-Aliassime is a player who the Canadian Davis Cup team relies on during their group stage in Valencia. In their first tie, Canada played against the Republic of Korea.
In the first match of the tie, Pospisil recorded a hard-fought win over Seongchan Hong. He lost the first set but rallied in the next two to win the match 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(5).
Thanks to Pospisil's win, the ATP World No. 13 player had a virtual "match point" against Soonwoo Kwon. But surprisingly, the Korean player beat Auger-Aliassime in two sets, 7-6(5), 6-3. That meant a doubles match had to decide the tie.
In doubles, the Canadian duo teamed up to try to seal the needed point for their country. Their task wasn't easy, as they took on Ji Sung Nam and Min-Kyu Song, who also play together on the Tour, so they had a slight advantage in the deciding match.
On the other hand, Canadians had the advantage of being more experienced players, and also more successful. They showed that in the first set of the doubles match. After losing their first serve, they managed to win the last three games of the set to win it 7-5 and get an important lead.
However, in the second set, the Korean duo fought back, and this time, they won the last three games and leveled the score of the match after winning the second set 7-5.
Eventually, Auger-Aliassime and Pospisil came back once again. They were losing already 1-3 in the last set of the match. However, they were able to win five consecutive games and win the match 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 to get the first point for Canada at the 2022 Davis Cup Finals.
