Camila Giorgi's tennis career was very exciting for many tennis fans, but her life after retirement, and the retirement in particular were very weird.
The Italian player, who once reached the World No. 26 spot on the WTA Tour, played her last tennis match at this year's Miami Open, losing to Iga Swiatek in two simple sets, 1-6, 1-6.
After that, there were a few weeks when not much was known about the 32-year-old, as she seemingly didn't sign up for any tournaments, and her social media profiles also didn't provide any clarity.
It wasn't clear whether the former Wimbledon quarter-finalist was dealing with some sort of injury, or whether she had a different problem that was keeping her away from the tennis courts.
After a few weeks, the answer was known. Seemingly out of nowhere, Giorgi retired from professional tennis, but she didn't do it in a way that most of the athletes do. Her name only appeared on the ITIA's website among retired players.
It took a few days, but Giorgi eventually confirmed her retirement with a statement, but in the meantime, there were various reports about her whereabouts and possible issues that could have prompted the sudden retirement.
One of the reports suggested that the former Italian player relocated to the United States and fled Italy because of tax problems. Only a week later, Italian publication Corriere Della Sera reported that Giorgi's former landlord accused her of six months of unpaid rent and, on top of that, stolen furniture.
None of this could have been confirmed, as the 2021 Canadian Open champion didn't communicate much with public or media, but that changed in recent weeks.
First, she posted a couple of pictures on her Instagram profile, which seemed to be taken in Dallas, Texas, Untied States, possibly confirming the story about fleeing her country and leaving to the United States.
However, a few days later, Giorgi held a questions and answers session on her Instagram profile, and naturally, some of the questions were also about the recent reports.
Of course, the question posted are visible only to the account that gave a chance to ask them, so the fact that fans got to see those questions meant that Giorgi herself chose to respond to them, suggesting that she may have been bothered by the reports.
According to Giorgi's response, all of the reports, which came from various sources, were incorrect. On top of that, she supported her claims by stating that she was in Italy only two weeks ago and that she plans to return to the country again 'soon'.
"Unfortunately, the worthless journalist make Fake News, and to get a few more clicks on their page, they would sell their dignity. I have a lawyer following me, and if I had problems, I wouldn’t have returned to Italy 2 weeks ago, and I will be back soon. Thank you for your love."
Of course, whether she was in Italy or not can't be confirmed, unless there is an evidence of that, and that applies also to the various claims and reports. Still, one thing is clear and that's the fact that Giorgi is no stranger to controversies, previously facing trial for allegedly faking her COVID-19 Vaccine Pass.
