Paula Badosa recently reprimanded a tennis fan for scolding her over a backstage moment with her boyfriend, Stefanos Tsitsipas, at the Cincinnati Open.
Badosa and Tsitsipas have rekindled their love affair after the pair amicably decided to split earlier this season. One reason they temporarily separated was the significant fan attention that resulted in public recognition of their relationship.
In fact, Badosa confirmed this once they reunited less than a month after parting ways. Tsitsipas accused people of "making up different stories" between the two and stated that he needed to take a break because of the pressure he was feeling on the Tour.
Badosa and Tsitsipas have since been hanging out together whenever they travel as a pair to tennis tournaments. The Spaniard expressed her wish to keep things private, although she understood that it would be extremely difficult for that to happen as they are prominent personalities.
Recently, the two were spotted together in the gym during the Cincinnati Open. Tennis TV shared a video of the couple holding hands while engaged in a stretching activity.
One user on X questioned Badosa's commitment to privacy, writing, "When they got back together, they said, 'I mean, it's our private life. I think one of the things that we didn't like is that it was very public, so now we want to keep it to ourselves.' So why don't they?"
The 26-year-old WTA star saw the comment and quickly fired back, saying that she was not aware that television cameras were operating in the gym and that she was only interested in talking to her boyfriend after reaching the quarterfinal of the WTA 1000 tournament.
"Unfortunately we didn’t know there were cameras there. I just finished my match, nobody was in the gym, we were just stretching and chatting after my win. So please, before all this judgement and talking, inform yourselfs and chill a bit."
The comment from the disappointed user has since been deleted, and Badosa has received overwhelming support from several fans, one of whom wrote, "You did nothing wrong, and people are just jealous! But it is not appropriate for @TennisTV to post something personal that has nothing to do with tennis without your knowledge!"
Badosa is enjoying a resurgence in 2024, highlighted by her 10-2 record at this year's North American hard-court swing. She won the Citi Open in Washington (her first WTA title in two years) and recently reached her first WTA 1000 semifinal in Cincinnati since 2022.
Sadly, her run came to a halt at the hands of the Toronto champion Jessica Pegula, who won a rain-interrupted semifinal match in three sets. But the good news for Badosa and her fans is that she is projected to break into the Top 30 when the rankings are updated.
She is guaranteed to be seeded at the US Open (her live ranking is No. 27). This is her best ranking since returning from a stress fracture on her back earlier this season.
