The first WTA 1000 tournament of 2024 will take place in Doha as the stars of women's tennis head to the Middle East to compete at the Qatar Open from February 11th to 17th.
The entry list for the event has been released and features a star-studded lineup worthy of gracing any Grand Slam tournament. The WTA's Top 10 have all signed up to play one of the most prestigious tournaments on the calendar.
For nearly a decade, the Qatar Open shared hosting rights for a WTA 1000 level tournament with its sister tournament in the Gulf region - the Dubai Championships. But it will be a standalone WTA 1000 tournament in 2024. The same applies to the tournament in Dubai.
Two-time defending champion Iga Swiatek will lead a jam-packed 64-player singles draw. She'll be joined by Aryna Sabalenka, who won the tournament back in 2020 just before the tour went into lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Sabalenka missed last year's event, electing to extend her celebrations after winning the 2023 Australian Open. Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina, and last year's runner-up Jessica Pegula also bolster the depth of the playing field.
Injured Czech star Karolina Muchova appears in the initial entry list but remains a major doubt to compete at the tournament due to a wrist issue. Muchova hasn't played since the 2023 US Open last September and withdrew from this year's Australian Open.
Arab fans will turn up in large numbers to cheer for Ons Jabeur, who is set to be a major star attraction during the WTA's famed Middle East swing. Swiatek isn't the only double champion in the draw.
Belarus' Victoria Azarenka is another decorated player with a terrific tournament record in Doha, famously defeating Serena Williams to defend her crown in 2013. Japanese star Naomi Osaka recently changed her schedule plans and will play in Doha with a Special Ranking.
Some of the most exciting names on the rise include Qinwen Zheng, Emma Navarro, Marta Kostyuk, and Caroline Dolehide, who are all set to feature. Be sure to check the complete entry list for the 2024 Qatar Open in Doha below.
