The draw has been released for the 2023 Palermo Open, WTA 250 event, which will be held from July 17th to 23rd.
After the conclusion of the third Grand Slam of the season, which was sensationally won by Marketa Vondrousova, players now have a chance to switch back to their preferred surfaces, and one of them are also the clay courts at the 2023 Palermo Ladies Open.
After the last year's event saw Irina-Camelia Begu lift the trophy, the fans in Palermo will see a new champion in 2023, as the Romanian is not taking part in the event. But there won't be a lack of favourites as the tournament organizers managed to attract a very competitive field that will fight for their share of prize money and points.
The top-seeded player at the tournament is the only Top 10 player competing in Palermo, Daria Kasatkina. The Russian will face a difficult test already in the first round as home player, Martina Trevisan, knows how to play on the clay courts, having reached the 2022 Roland Garros semifinals.
On the other side of the draw is the second-seeded Qinwen Zheng who received a wild card for the tournament. Similarly to the top seed, the Chinese player will also face a challenging opponent in 2012 Roland Garros finalist Sara Errani.
The third-seeded Mayar Sherif from Egypt will also want to prove her qualities, starting against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro from Spain. The highest-seeded home player is No. 4 Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who will start against Sara Sorribes Tormo from Spain.
Another home seed is No. 5 Jasmine Paolini, who will kick off her tournament against Arantxa Rus from the Netherlands. Former World No. 21, Dayna Yastremska, has struggled with her tennis recently, and she will want to turn that around against one of the qualifiers in the first round.
