Mayar Sherif is an Egyptian professional tennis player who was born on May 5, 1996, in Cairo, Egypt. Born to father Sherif Ahmed and mother Amal Thabet, Mayar was introduced to the sport at the age of just 4. After it became evident that she was talented with a racquet, she enjoyed a successful junior career.

She was keen to turn this success into points on the professional tour, and her efforts paid off in 2020 when she made her WTA main draw debut at the Prague Open. Later that season, she battled through a tough qualifying tournament to progress to the first round of the French Open to make her Grand Slam debut. Not only that, but she also became the first Egyptian female player to play at that level.

She went one step better the following season, becoming the first Egyptian to win a match at a Grand Slam when she beat Chloe Paquet in the first round of the Australian Open. 2021 was another memorable year for the Egyptian as she went on to make her WTA 1000 debut at the Indian Wells Open, as well as playing in the Tokyo Summer Olympics.

All this progress was topped off nicely when she reached her first WTA tour-level final at the Transylvania Open in Cluj. She went one better in 2022 when she claimed her first WTA main draw title at the Emilia-Romagna Open in Parma when she overcame Maria Sakkari in the final.

As is a running theme with her career, with this win, she also became the first Egyptian woman to win a WTA title. As the years progressed, so did her ranking. By mid-2023, broke into the Top 35, which in turn made her the highest-ranked Egyptian player in the Open Era.

A history-maker at heart, Sherif continues to make strides on the WTA Tour, constantly in search of that next WTA trophy.
