The 2023 Birmingham Classic will run from June 19th to 25th as a WTA 250 event and it attracted a lot of Grand Slam champions.
As one of a very few grass-court tournaments, the event in Birmingham holds an important place in the calendar. In the past, the tournament was won by the likes of Martina Navratilova, Maria Sharapova, Ashleigh Barty, and many more.
All of them have won multiple Grand Slams as well as Petra Kvitova and Angelique Kerber who are also former champions of the tournament. There won't be a lack of star-power in 2023 as many major winners found their way to Birmingham again.
The 2021 Roland Garros champion, Barbora Krejcikova, is one of them, but the Czech recently lost in the first round of the tournament that she won two years ago and her form has been far from ideal.
Another of the Grand Slam champions is the 2017 Roland Garros winners, Jelena Ostapenko who will also participate in Birmingham. But probably the most exciting name on the entry list is the one of a seven-time singles Grand Slam champion, Venus Williams.
Out of her seven major triumphs, Williams won five at Wimbledon, so grass courts really suit her. She received a wild card for the 2023 Birmingham Classic and her participation is highly anticipated as she's been away from tennis since January.
But if Venus wants to make a deep run in Birmingham, she will need to face a field of talented competitors. Last year's champion, Beatriz Haddad Maia will be one of them, and finalist from the 2022 event, Shuai Zhang is another.
The likes of Madison Keys, Magda Linette, and Anastasia Potapova will also compete, with last year's semifinalist Sorana Cirstea also joining the entry list. Out of the last year's last four, only Simona Halep will miss the event as she's currently suspended due to a doping case.
