The 2022 Morocco Open will run from May 15th to 21st, and details of prize money and ranking points have been revealed.
This is the only WTA clay-court tournament taking place on African soil. The 32-player singles field will have the chance to win a trophy and a generous remuneration package.
This will be the 20th edition of the Morocco Open, which was last held in 2019 and won by Maria Sakkari. It returns after a two-year hiatus largely due to the coronavirus pandemic.
We are guaranteed a new champion this time because Sakkari will not return to Rabat to defend the one and only WTA title she won three years ago. Instead, Alja Tomljanovic and Yulia Putintseva are the top seeds. They recently faced each other in Istanbul, with the Kazakhstani coming out on top.
Other bona fide candidates will also vie for the top prize in Rabat, including Nuria Parrizas Diaz, Alison Van Uytvanck, Mayar Sherif, Beatriz Haddad Maia, and Anna Bondar.
The tournament is one of the final events before Roland Garros, and it will help players get in shape and peak form for the season's second Grand Slam while simultaneously battling for the biggest share of the total prize money pot of $251,750.
The tournament will pay $2,725 for a first-round loss. The points incentive is extremely minimal at this stage, with competing players getting only one point. Things get extremely better if they progress into the second round, where the organizers will offer up to $3,800 and 30 points.
Reaching the quarterfinal of the Morocco Open will assure the competitors up to $6,200 in prize money and 60 points. Those who exit the tournament in the semifinal stage will earn $11,000 and receive 110 points.
The champion will earn the biggest chunk of prize money, equating to $33,200, in addition to 280 points that could boost their WTA ranking. The beaten finalist, for her part, will earn $19,750 and receive 180 points. Be sure to check the full overview in the table below.
