Rohan Bopanna was born in Bangalore, India, on March 4, 1980, to his parents, M.G. and Malika Bopanna. His father inspired him to start playing tennis at age 11. However, he didn’t start playing competitively until age 19.
Initially, Bopanna played in singles and doubles competitions and won several Futures singles titles in India. In 2002, he made his ATP singles debut at the Chennai Open. Bopanna also reached several Grand Slam qualification rounds, an Indian Wells main draw and reached two Challenger Tour finals.
However, Bopanna specializes in doubles and hasn’t played a singles event since 2021. Bopanna’s breakthrough season for doubles came in 2006 when he reached two ATP finals. His first final appearance came at the Chennai Open with Prakash Amritraj before another final run with Mustafa Ghouse in Mumbai.
Now committed to a doubles career, Bopanna won four Challenger titles with long-term partner Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi in 2007. The duo also reached another ATP final in Mumbai. Bopanna’s first ATP doubles title came in 2008 with Eric Butorac in Los Angeles. The partners defeated Travis Parrott and Dusan Vemic in the final.
In 2009, Bopanna suffered a dip in form and made just one ATP doubles final early in the season at San Jose. However, the Indian player started to play regularly with Qureshi in 2010 and the pair started to see regular doubles success. Their second ATP title came in Johannesburg before they reached their first Grand Slam final at the US Open before losing to Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan.
Bopanna and Qureshi won three more titles in 2011, including the Paris Masters, while their most recent tournament win was at the 2014 Dubai Championships. However, Bopanna had unrivaled success in men’s and mixed doubles with several other playing partners.
At the 2016 Olympics, Bopanna reached the semi-finals with Sania Mirza and the pair achieved a fourth-placed finish. In 2017, he won his first-ever Grand Slam doubles title in the mixed-gender event with Canadian player Gabriela Dabrowski.
Bopanna made history in 2023 and 2024 due to his achievement in doubles at the highest level. In 2023, he became the oldest ATP Masters 1000 champion, aged 43, when he won the men’s doubles with Matthew Ebden.
Then, he made another landmark in 2024 by reaching world number one in doubles for the first time in his career. This milestone followed Bopanna and Ebden’s victory at the 2024 Australian Open, where the partners defeated Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori. Bopanna and Ebden followed this triumph with a Miami Open win in April - Bopanna’s sixth Masters title of his career.
