Another week of tennis is in the books, and with it, the latest edition of the WTA Rankings comes out, featuring a dramatic rise of a 17-year-old prodigy
While men competed in the Davis Cup and didn't earn any ranking points, women had already completed the first week of events after the US Open. There were two tournaments held, a WTA 250 event in Sao Paulo and a WTA 500 tournament in Guadalajara.
None of the Top 10 players took part, so that means the Top 10 stayed without any changes. Aryna Sabalenka leads with 11,225 points, Iga Swiatek is second with 7,933 points, and Coco Gauff is close behind with 7,874 points to her name.
Amanda Anisimova (5,159 points), Mirra Andreeva (4,793 points), Madison Keys (4,579 points), Jessica Pegula (4,383 points), Jasmine Paolini (4,006 points), Qinwen Zheng (4,003 points), and Elena Rybakina (3,833 points) complete the rest of the Top 10.
There weren't any moves in the Top 20 either, but there were some significant shifts lower down the rankings. 17-year-old Iva Jovic enjoyed a great week in Guadalajara, and she took advantage of the depleted field at the WTA 500 event.
The teenager beat Katarzyna Kawa, Camila Osorio, Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva, Nikola Bartunkova, and Emiliana Arango to win her maiden WTA-level trophy. Thanks to her run, Jovic increased her total by 500 points, and she now has 1,413 points to her name.
Thanks to that, she skyrocketed up the rankings, breaking into the Top 40, reaching the world No. 36 position. The teenager could soon fight for a seeded spot at Grand Slams. But she wasn't the only teenager who won a trophy this year.
Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah is a 19-year-old player who played the best tennis of her career in Sao Paulo. She beat Ana Sofia Sanchez, Victoria Rodriguez, Panna Udvardy, Renata Zarazua, and Janice Tjen to win the Sao Paulo Open.
Rakotomanga Rajaonah improved her ranking by 83 positions, as she almost doubled her points total. The 19-year-old French player is now the new world No. 131, and she will soon fight for main draw spots at majors.
Apart from these two teenage sensations, Emiliana Arango also made a significant move up the rankings. As the Guadalajara Open finalist, she earned 325 points and improved her career-high position to No. 53. She moved up by 33 spots.
On the other hand, the likes of Magdalena Frech (down by 17 spots), Eva Lys (down by 13 positions), Sonay Cartal (fell by 29 spots), and Camila Osorio (down by 16 positions) all fell down the rankings.
The following weeks should bring more changes, also in the Top 10. The world No. 2, Iga Swiatek, competes already this week in Seoul, and the rest of the Top 10 will soon join her in Asia. The China Open, which is a WTA 1000 tournament, starts on September 24th.
