The
draw for the 2025
Chengdu Open, which starts on September 17th, has been revealed.
The Asian swing is here, and it starts with two
ATP 250 tournaments in Hangzhou and Chengdu. Both begin on September 17th, which is untraditional, as it's Wednesday and the vast majority of tennis tournaments start on Monday with a Sunday final.
The Chengdu Open was first held in 2016 when Karen Khachanov lifted the trophy. Since then, there have been five more editions and five different champions. Denis Istomin, Bernard Tomic, Pablo Carreno Busta, Alexander Zverev, and Juncheng Shang all won a trophy in Chengdu.
This year, only one of them appears in the draw again. Shang will play in Chengdu once again, attempting to defend his title from last year. In the first round, he will play against Zizou Bergs, with the winner taking on the fourth-seeded
Brandon Nakashima, who has a first-round bye, in the second round.
Last year, Shang defeated
Lorenzo Musetti in the final, and the Italian comes to the Chinese city once again, trying to go one step further than he did last year. As the top seed, he has a first-round bye and will begin his Asian swing with a match against Dino Prizmic or Cincinnati Open semi-finalist Terence Atmane.
Another Italian player lies on the opposite side of the draw. Luciano Darderi is the second seed. He will kick off his Chengdu Open journey against
Jordan Thompson or one of the qualifiers.
Tallon Griekspoor is a player who thrives on hard courts. This time, he can be properly challenged by Coleman Wong, who is one of the most talented players of his generation. Wong received a wild card, and if he beats one of the qualifiers in the first round, he will play against Griekspoor.
While Musetti is the only current Top 10 player in the draw, a couple more players who reached the Top 10 will play in Chengdu. One of those players is the fifth-seeded
Cameron Norrie, who will play against home wild card Yi Zhou in the first round.
Another former Top 10 star,
Gael Monfils, will attempt to delight the Chinese crowd with his exceptional shotmaking. He will play against
Alexander Shevchenko in the first round of the tournament.
Fans in China might be able to see an all-French second-round match if Monfils wins. His second-round opponent could be the big-serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, who will play against Filip Misolic in the first round.
