The 2025
Shanghai Masters, scheduled from October 1st to 12th, will be the next
ATP Masters 1000 tournament, and the
entry list for the high-profile event has been unveiled.
Since its inception in 2009, the Shanghai Masters has been one of the most popular tennis tournaments worldwide. Attendances are always impressive, and players seem to enjoy playing in front of lively atmospheres.
It is the most critical part of the ATP's Asian swing, which begins next week with the 2025 Hangzhou Open and Chengdu Open. Last year's event in Hangzhou
was won by Marin Cilic, who became the lowest-ranked men's singles champion ever.
Jannik Sinner is the defending champion in Shanghai. His title run at last year's tournament was just one highlight from a breakthrough 2024 season that included Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and US Open.
The Italian has added two more major crowns at this year's Wimbledon and Australian Open iterations. However, he enters the Asian swing after being comprehensively outplayed by
Carlos Alcaraz in the 2025 US Open final.
Sinner will begin his spell in Asia at the previous week's 2025 China Open in Beijing. The four-time Grand Slam winner won the title there in 2023, but
was outlasted by Alcaraz in a brutal three-hour final last year.
Fans hoping to see another edition of Alcaraz vs Sinner in Beijing were left disappointed when the Spaniard was announced for the 2025 Japan Open in Tokyo instead, which he will use as his preparation for the Shanghai Masters.
Alcaraz lost to an inspired Tomas Machac in the quarterfinal of the 2024 Shanghai Masters. He should be more confident of avoiding any upsets this year after an incredible eight consecutive finals from the Monte-Carlo Masters until the US Open. That run
saw him overtake Sinner as the world No. 1.
Novak Djokovic is currently on the entry list. Whether the legendary 24-time Grand Slam champion will feature in Shanghai remains uncertain since he has played a much lighter schedule in the last few years to focus on the four majors.
However, that did not stop Djokovic from competing at last year's Shanghai Masters. The Serbian had an impressive run to the final before losing to Sinner, who has beaten him six consecutive times (including the Six Kings Slam).
Ben Shelton is another man whose participation is uncertain despite being on the entry list. This year's Australian Open semifinalist retired with an injury at the US Open against Adrian Mannarino and withdrew from the Davis Cup and Laver Cup because of that problem.
Jack Draper will not compete at the Shanghai Masters or any other tournaments in 2025 because of an arm injury. He was one of the six players announced for the 2025 Six Kings Slam before being forced to take that decision.
Many other excellent players can fill Draper's void, such as
Alexander Zverev,
Holger Rune,
Casper Ruud,
Frances Tiafoe,
Stefanos Tsitsipas, and
Alex de Minaur. When the tournament begins, fans should be treated to much excellent tennis.
