The tournament organizers at the 2025 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix were hit by disappointing news as two of the biggest stars, Ons Jabeur and Qinwen Zheng, withdrew from the tournament.
The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart is one of the most favorite WTA 500 tournaments among the players. As an indoor clay-court event, it provides them with a perfect switch to the red dirt, and there is also an additional incentive to play at the event.
Usually, players win only prize money at tournaments, but in Stuttgart, the winner also wins a brand-new Porsche, which usually has even higher value than the champion gets in prize money.
Although the entry list for the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix is full of stars such as Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, and Iga Swiatek, two of the possible title contenders won't compete in Stuttgart this year.
Ons Jabeur is one of the players who competes in Stuttgart every time she can. She reached the quarter-finals in 2022 and made it to the semi-finals of the tournament in 2023.
Last year, the Tunisian player lost in the second round, and she won't get a chance to compete this year after withdrawing because of a leg injury. Unfortunately, shortly after the Tunisian's withdrawal, another player joined Jabeur in withdrawing from the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.
Qinwen Zheng competed in Stuttgart in 2023 and 2024, reaching the second round on both occasions, but she won't make her third appearance at this WTA 500 event in 2025.
Zheng also provided a statement after withdrawing from the tournament, saying that her body needs rest after demanding few weeks in the United States, where she competed at the Indian Wells Open and Miami Open.
"Following a few long weeks in the US, my body is fatigued and needs some proper rest to recover and get me back to 100%. I had a great time playing in Stuttgart last year and I am sad to miss this year’s tournament, but look very much forward to returning next year."
Former French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova also withdrew from the tournament because of her ongoing back injury.
Although fans of these tennis players will be disappointed about the withdrawals of their favorite players, there are also those who will have a reason to be happy. After the latest withdrawal, Rebecca Sramkova entered the main draw.
The 2025 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix starts on April 14th, and Aryna Sabalenka will be the top seed at the event.
