Next week's 2025 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart could be the best WTA 500 tournament of 2025, and the players who have signed up will compete for the prize money and ranking points on offer.
Fans who attend the indoor clay court tournament will be treated to some of the best female players in the world, including Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, and Mirra Andreeva.
One notable absence from the entry list is defending champion Elena Rybakina. The 2022 Wimbledon champion has decided to represent Team Kazakhstan in this week's 2025 Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers and then take next week off.
The top players who signed up for the indoor clay court tournament in Stuttgart undoubtedly did so at least partially to get some practice ahead of the 2025 Madrid Open and 2025 Italian Open.
However, those women will also compete to win the highest share of the prize money on offer. They can also earn ranking points that could significantly affect many of the players on the entry list.
The 2025 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix champion will receive €142,610. That is an improvement on the prize money given to Rybakina at last year's event, showing the organizers have worked to keep the tournament attractive for top players.
As always, the winner of WTA 500 events like the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix is guaranteed 500 points. Gauff dropped to No. 4 in this week's rankings, but would reclaim the No. 3 spot from Jessica Pegula if she won the title in Stuttgart.
Sabalenka has opened up a more than 3,000-point lead at the top of the rankings. World No. 2 Swiatek, who lost in last year's semifinal at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, could slip further behind when she defends points from titles at the Madrid Open, Italian Open, and French Open.
Marta Kostyuk was the runner-up to Rybakina at last year's event. The woman who replicates her in 2025 will collect €87,825 and 325 ranking points. Sabalenka, Caroline Wozniacki, and Justine Henin are other former runner-ups.
Marketa Vondrousova joined Swiatek in losing in the 2024 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix semifinal. They would have received €51,305 and 195 points had they fallen in the 2025 iteration of the popular tournament.
The defeated quarterfinalists will earn less than half what the semifinalists are guaranteed to receive. €27,040 and 108 ranking points are on the table for those four players, which is still a reasonable sum.
If none of them withdraw, Sabalenka, Swiatek, Jessica Pegula, and Gauff will be the Top four seeds. That means they will receive a bye into the round of 16 since the main draw has 28 instead of 32 players.
Therefore, those four women are guaranteed to take home at least 60 ranking points and €13,760. One ranking point is given to those who lose in the first round of WTA 500 tournaments. They will be compensated with €9,828 in Stuttgart.
The 2025 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix will likely feel more like a WTA 1000 tournament because of its incredible entry list, and it has the potential to be one of the best events of the season.
