The 2025
Wimbledon Championships main draw does not start until June 30th, but the women's
entry list for this year's iteration of the iconic event has already been released.
Although the men's and women's singles at Wimbledon are always entertaining, the
WTA players contested several outstanding matches that left fans on the edge of their seats with the quality being produced.
Jasmine Paolini and
Donna Vekic's semifinal was one of the best women's contests ever played at SW19. After an astounding, drama-filled battle, the Italian ultimately showed incredible mental fortitude to prevail 2-6, 6-4, 7-6.
Last year's women's final was also outstanding. Paolini looked to be in the ascendancy after winning the second set and playing better from the baseline for most of the third set, but
Barbora Krejcikova served incredibly in the decider to win 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
Aryna Sabalenka missed the fun in 2024. The world No. 1 was forced to withdraw with an injury and might have felt she missed a great opportunity to win the title after Krejcikova's surprising run to glory.
Sabalenka was just one set away from the final in her last two appearances. Despite claiming the opening set in both matches, she lost to Karolina Pliskova and
Ons Jabeur in 2021 and 2023.
Those disappointments, missing last year's iteration and being absent in 2022 because Russian and Belarusian players were suspended, mean Sabalenka probably feels she has unfinished business at the third Grand Slam of the year.
Coco Gauff will hope to perform well at her weakest Grand Slam to date. Although the world No. 2 became known worldwide after reaching the fourth round at SW19 as a 15-year-old, she has struggled to meet her high standards since.
Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam where Gauff has failed to reach the quarterfinals. Low-bouncing grass courts often expose her forehand, and she recently
received advice about how to improve that shot.
Despite her challenging season so far, 2022 champion
Elena Rybakina will still be among the favorites for the title. She lost in last year's semifinal to Krejcikova after being widely viewed as the pre-tournament favorite, especially because of Sabalenka's absence.
Expectations for
Iga Swiatek are always lower at Wimbledon than at the other Grand Slams because she is least comfortable on grass. The Pole's struggles in the last 12 months mean she might be viewed as an even bigger outsider than in the previous few years.
Mirra Andreeva's first-round loss to Brenda Fruhvirtova was among the most significant shocks of last year. The 2025 Indian Wells Open and
2025 Dubai Championships winner will have a chance to make up for it in a few weeks.
Naomi Osaka has never been past the third round at Wimbledon, and the last time she reached that point was in 2018. The four-time Grand Slam winner will hope to cause a shock with a deep run in London.
Home hero and 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu lost to Lulu Sun in last year's fourth round. The Briton's game suits grass, and she could cause some upsets if she produces her best tennis.
The entry list also includes defending champion Krejcikova, Paolini,
Madison Keys,
Paula Badosa, and Ons Jabeur.
