The 2025
Swiss Indoors in Basel will be the latest edition of one of the
ATP's longest-running tournaments, and its
entry list has been unveiled.
It was first held in 1970 and has been played every year since, except 2020 and 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Several high-profile players have won the event since its inception 45 years ago.
Home hero and tennis icon Roger Federer's appearances in Basel meant the tournament received huge attention for several years. It was a 250-level event during some of that time before being upgraded to a 500-level event in 2009, and Federer's presence is probably what elevated it.
The Swiss maestro won ten titles, most recently in 2019. Other notable former winners over the years include Novak Djokovic, Juan Martin Del Potro, Pete Sampras, Jim Courier, and John McEnroe.
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard is the defending champion.
He won a battle between arguably the two best servers on the ATP Tour against
Ben Shelton, 6-4, 7-6. The Frenchman's first delivery thrived in the indoor conditions.
Shelton is on this year's entry list, but his participation cannot be definitively confirmed at this stage. The two-time Grand Slam semifinalist retired from his 2025 US Open third-round match against Adrian Mannarino with a shoulder injury.
Understandably, the American was utterly devastated by that moment at his home Grand Slam. Many considered him one of the likeliest dark horses for the title outside Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, who have dominated men's tennis in the last two years.
Shelton's compatriot,
Taylor Fritz, is also on the entry list. Since the start of June, he has won more ATP matches than any other player. That includes title runs in Stuttgart and Eastbourne, both grass-court tournaments.
However,
Fritz's best results have come on hard courts, most notably finishing as the 2024 US Open and ATP Finals runner-up and the 2022 Indian Wells Open champion. He will be among the favorites in Basel.
Holger Rune was the 2022 runner-up at the Swiss Indoors to
Felix Auger-Aliassime. The Dane will probably rely on any positive memories after a challenging season where he has mostly not found his best tennis.
Winning the 2025 Barcelona Open was the most notable exception. Although Sinner and Alcaraz are currently a long way ahead of him, the 22-year-old still has a lot of time to improve and consistently challenge for the biggest trophies.
Rune's fellow Scandinavian Casper Ruud's best moment of 2025 was winning the Madrid Open. Although indoor courts are not a natural fit for his game, the Norwegian finished as the 2022 ATP Finals runner-up.
Joao Fonseca receives incredible support from Brazilians wherever he plays. Although there will undoubtedly not be as many Brazilians in Basel as in some tournaments, there are always at least some, no matter where he appears.
Three-time Grand Slam champion
Stan Wawrinka's achievements and being Swiss meant he received a wild card. Despite being 40, the former French Open winner continues to compete well, and
he also got a wild card for the 2025 Shanghai Masters.
Two-time winner Felix Auger-Aliassime,
Denis Shapovalov,
Sebastian Korda,
Jiri Lehecka, and
Arthur Fils are among the other players on the Swiss Indoors entry list.
