The 2025 French Open at
Roland Garros starts on Sunday. As always at a Grand Slam, there is lucrative
prize money and ranking points to be won.
Equal prize money is given to the
ATP and
WTA players at the four majors. The US Open was the first tournament to offer it after Billie Jean King's advocacy, and the French Open and Wimbledon were the final Grand Slams to give the same financial rewards.
This year's French Open could be one of the best in years.
The women's draw might be more open than recent iterations because
Iga Swiatek, winner of four titles at Roland Garros since 2020, has been struggling for form.
Coco Gauff,
Aryna Sabalenka, Jasmine Paolini, and Mirra Andreeva are among the players who will fight for a maiden title in Paris. Any of those women would be capable of triumphing in the French capital if Swiatek struggled again.
Carlos Alcaraz is the defending champion on the men's side. Most consider him the favorite to retain the title after an excellent clay-court swing that has included title wins at the 2025 Monte-Carlo Masters and 2025 Italian Open.
Jannik Sinner lost the final in Rome to Alcaraz, but he played well in his first tournament since January.
Novak Djokovic will fight for a record 25th Grand Slam singles title when he starts his campaign at Roland Garros.
Although all players would be desperate to win a Grand Slam regardless of any other factors, the significant prize money and ranking points offered might incentivize those in the draw to give their best. €56.352 million is the total sum being committed by the event.
The 2025 men's and women's French Open champions will receive a massive €2,550,000. That is €150,000 more than what was given to Swiatek and Alcaraz last year for reigning supreme on the Parisian clay. The winner also receives 2,000 ranking points.
Jasmine Paolini and Alexander Zverev were the 2024 runner-ups. Whichever pair replicates that feat is guaranteed to collect €1,275,000 and 1,300 ranking points. They might not be good enough rewards to soothe the pain of losing a Grand Slam final, though.
Mirra Andreeva reached her maiden major semifinal at last year's French Open. Players who reach that stage without going any further will be rewarded with 800 ranking points and €690,000.
The rewards remain significant for the eight losing quarterfinalists across the men's and women's draws. Those four men and four women will have €440,000 added to their bank accounts, as well as getting 400 points.
€265,000 and 200 ranking points are on the table for those who progress to the round of 16 at the French Open. The rewards drop to €168,000 and 100 points at the round of 32 stage, still decent numbers for winning two main draw matches.
€117,000 and 50 ranking points will be given to the men and women who lose in the round of 64 in Paris. The prize money falls to five figures for the opening round. Those beaten at the first hurdle are guaranteed €78,000 and 10 points.
