Jannik Sinner seemed surprised that the first question he received in his pre-tournament Roland Garros press conference was not about the event itself.
The ATP world No. 1's appearance at the 2025 French Open will be his second since returning from a three-month suspension given to him by the World Anti-Doping Agency after a settlement was reached to end his controversial case.
Reactions to Sinner returning to professional action have been polarized. Many are thrilled to have one of the best players in the world back on the court, but others think he deserved a lengthier suspension.
That background and the excitement surrounding the season's second Grand Slam meant Sinner did not expect to be asked about a recent appearance in Copenhagen, where he was pictured walking with a girl.
Sinner clarified that he went to the Danish capital for a few photo shoots and that he was not dating the girl that some media sources pictured him walking with.
"There was no girl. I just had some business, some photoshoots there. That's it, nothing else."(smiles)
This year's Australian Open champion deserves credit for answering the question in a friendly and respectful manner, since some other players might not have been as happy to start their press conference with a non-tennis-related question.
Sinner faced similar rumors at the 2025 Italian Open. He was pictured with the Russian model Lara Leito during his three-month suspension from the sport, which ended a few days before the tournament in Rome began.
Rather than wait to be asked about it, Sinner started his first press conference at his home tournament by confirming he was not in a relationship, and the picture did not indicate a new romance off the court.
While Sinner was aware of those rumors and came to that press conference prepared, he was blindsided by the Danish reporter's question in Paris. It seems that the 23-year-old cannot be with any girl in public without rumors circulating.
Four-time Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek did not react as cordially to one of the questions at her press conference. She was asked whether being at the tournament was an emotional lift after challenging results so far this season.
Swiatek disliked the question and said she did not need an emotional lift. Although the reporter probably did not have any ill intent, he could have at least worded the question differently, and the Pole's response to it was understandable.
Sinner seemed content in his press conference. The three-time Grand Slam champion had an impressive first tournament back at the Italian Open, losing to his rival Carlos Alcaraz in the final.
Although being defeated in front of his home fans was undoubtedly disappointing, getting to that point after being away from professional tennis for a considerable period was a great achievement and might have raised Sinner's expectations for the French Open.
Carlos Alcaraz is the favorite among many for the title, but several others are gunning to triumph in Paris. Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, and Casper Ruud join Sinner as contenders.
