The 2025 Madrid Open, scheduled from April 22nd until May 4th, will be the second ATP Masters 1000 tournament played on clay. There is a superb entry list for the tournament.
Last year's clay court tournaments before the 2024 French Open featured some surprises. That included Andrey Rublev winning the 2024 Madrid Open, defeating Holger Rune in the final.
Although Rublev is an excellent player, he had been struggling with an illness before the tournament. How he rebounded to reign supreme in Spain was a superb effort and one of the best moments of his career.
Rublev has committed to defending his Madrid Open title. The ten-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist won the 2025 Qatar Open, but he has lost every match since then, including at both tournaments during the Sunshine double.
Home hero Carlos Alcaraz lost in the quarterfinal to Rublev at last year's Madrid Open. He was the two-time defending champion at the event, and fans inside the stadium were left stunned by the defeat.
Alcaraz will hope to get better preparation for this year's iteration of the Madrid Open. The four-time Grand Slam champion missed the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters and 2024 Barcelona Open with an injury.
Missing those tournaments and exiting his home tournament in Madrid were among the most challenging moments of his 2024 career, and it will be interesting to observe how he coped with that during the upcoming Netflix documentary about his 2024 season.
Novak Djokovic is set to compete at the Madrid Open for the first time since 2022. The tennis legend played a limited schedule in 2023 and 2024 and chose to skip the tournament in Madrid to prioritize not overplaying before the French Open.
Djokovic has decided to play more events this season than in previous years. That was proven by him competing at the 2025 Miami Open for the first time since 2019, losing in the final to Jakub Mensik.
Alexander Zverev will look to reignite his season at the Madrid Open. The German made a strong start to 2025 by reaching the 2025 Australian Open, but has struggled to get over comprehensively losing the final to Jannik Sinner.
Zverev failed to get past the quarterfinal at any of his five tournaments since. That drop in form means he missed a golden chance to close on Sinner at No. 1 in the rankings, who is suspended from February 9th until May 4th.
After their achievements during the Sunshine Double, there will be heightened focus on two young stars at the Madrid Open. 2025 Indian Wells Open champion Jack Draper is on the entry list and will look to improve on clay, his least successful surface to date.
Miami Open champion Mensik is also on the entry list. The 19-year-old's run to the title in Miami was a stunning breakthrough and made him known to millions of sports fans worldwide.
Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, Casper Ruud, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Grigor Dimitrov, and Holger Rune are some of the other names on the entry list for the Madrid Open.
