The 2025 Italian Open is scheduled from May 7th to May 18th, immediately after the 2025 Madrid Open. As expected, the entry list for the tournament in Rome is very strong.
Last year's final was between Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka, the world's Top 2 women's players. There were high expectations for it since the pair had played one of the greatest WTA matches ever in the 2025 Madrid Open final, which Swiatek won after saving three match points.
Unfortunately, fans in Rome were not treated to the same drama. Swiatek comprehensively defeated the Belarusian 6-2, 6-3 in a contest that was even more one-sided than the final scoreline suggests.
That was the Pole's third Italian Open title. She prefers the slower clay at the tournament compared to the Madrid Open. Swiatek had never won the title in Spain before her thrilling triumph in last year's final.
The world No. 2 will attempt to win a fourth title in five appearances next month. Her only blip since 2021 was caused by retiring in the deciding set against Elena Rybakina in the 2023 quarterfinal because of an injury.
Swiatek has a chance to build momentum on her favorite surface before the tournament in Rome at the 2025 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix and 2025 Madrid Open. Those are also opportunities for the 23-year-old to win a first title this season.
Sabalenka's lead at No. 1 could have increased by the time the Italian Open begins. She is currently over 3,000 points ahead of Swiatek, and her younger rival has more points to defend before the event in Rome starts.
2022 French Open runner-up Coco Gauff starts the clay court swing still waiting for a maiden WTA 1000 title on the dirt. She is very comfortable on it, but has repeatedly fallen short against Swiatek in particular.
Although Gauff's sole Grand Slam title was on the hard courts at the 2023 US Open, she might be relieved to switch from hard to clay after a challenging few tournaments in the Middle East and then in Indian Wells and Miami.
Expectations have risen for Mirra Andreeva since the teenage prodigy's title runs at the 2025 Dubai Championships and 2025 Indian Wells Open. She is comfortable on all surfaces and could do more damage in Rome.
Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka might not feel much pressure when she steps onto the court at the Italian Open. Clay is not her favorite surface, but the Japanese star's powerful game can still cause opponents problems.
Jessica Pegula became the world No. 3 and U.S. No. 1 after winning the Charleston Open. Although red clay has been the 31-year-old's least successful surface, she is still capable of playing well in any conditions.
2023 Italian Open champion Elena Rybakina is another player to watch. Many underestimate how well the Kazakhstani's blistering game translates to clay and she will hope to show that again in Rome.
2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys, Qinwen Zheng, Amanda Anisimova, Petra Kvitova, and Jasmine Paolini are some of the other players on the Italian Open entry list.
