Alexander Zverev just can't stop losing at the moment, but he is also being very honest with himself, aware of his ongoing problems.

Zverev was in the pole position to take the ATP World No. 1 spot away from Jannik Sinner during the Italian player's suspension, but he won't do it before Sinner again returns to the tennis courts.

As the German player knows himself, he is the only one to blame as he has struggled to deliver the results that were needed to accumulate enough points to overtake the current ATP leader.

Zverev's most recent loss came at the 2025 Monte-Carlo Masters, where he was given a challenging draw. Already in the second round of the tournament, he had to take on former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini.

Berrettini played a very good match, winning 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, but Zverev knew who was to blame after losing the match. The top seed didn't want to find any excuses and was honest about what happened during the match.

According to Zverev, since the moment he lost his serve in the second set of the match, he started playing much worse than he did in the opening set, which he won 6-2.

"What was decisive is that I played the first set very well, but once I lost my serve in the second set, I started playing 10 times worse. My ball is very slow, I can’t move anything."

One of the most criticized parts of Zverev's game is his passivity. In this match, he again felt that he wasn't proactive enough to secure the win, which was ultimately the reason why he lost.

"I stopped hitting the ball, and this has been the same story for the past few months. Nothing changes, always the same. So it’s me who lost the match, once again."

Zverev was also honest about how he felt regarding his level. The German player called it "terrible," saying that even he doesn't know why he's been struggling so much.

"I thought my level was terrible, but that’s just my opinion. I have no idea what’s happening to me right now. I have been trying to understand it for several months, but I don’t even know what to say anymore. I don’t know. All I know is that I’m losing matches, nothing more."
"If I were to win two or three matches this way, fighting so hard, there wouldn’t be as many questions. But I lost in three sets in Buenos Aires, in three sets in Rio, in three sets in Indian Wells, in three sets in Miami, and in three sets here. I haven’t won a single one, and that’s what matters."
