The 2025 Hong Kong Open is one of two ATP 250 tournaments held in the first week of a new season, and the prize money pot was revealed before the event began.
Men's and women's players have many options during the season's opening week. Some are competing at the United Cup, a combined ATP and WTA event that allows players to represent their countries.
The Brisbane International is another combined tournament occurring this week. Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios already thrilled fans there by emphatically winning their first match as a doubles team.
WTA players have a third option of competing at the ASB Classic in Auckland, a 250-level tournament. Naomi Osaka, who recently spoke honestly about stepping away from tennis if her results do not improve, is among those in the draw in Auckland.
The Hong Kong Open is the other tournament taking place this week on the ATP Tour. After being played from 1973-2002 (aside from 1988 and 1989), the event was not played for 21 years until last year.
Andrey Rublev became the first Hong Kong Open champion in 22 years last year, defeating Emil Ruusuvuori in the final. Juan Carlos Ferrero, Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, and Jim Courier are other high-profile past champions in Hong Kong.
Rublev returns to the tournament this year as the No. 1 seed. Lorenzo Musetti, Karen Khachanov, and Arthur Fils are among the other seeded players at the 2025 Hong Kong Open.
The players in the draw may be motivated by the prize money and ranking points on offer at the ATP 250 tournament, including a six-figure sum for whichever man secures the title at the event first held over 50 years ago.
This year's Hong Kong Open champion will receive $103,455 out of $766,290 distributed at the event and 250 ranking points. That is an impressive sum for a 250-level event and should give the players ample incentive to give it everything to win their matches.
165 ranking points and $60,350 are on offer for the man who manages to overcome the opening four rounds but loses in the final. Ruusuvuori defeated Khachanov during his run to the final at last year's tournament.
Shang Juncheng and Sebastian Ofner were the losing semifinalists at the 2024 Hong Kong Open. Both players would have received $35,480 and 100 points had their runs happened at this year's iteration of the event in Hong Kong.
Frances Tiafoe was among the quarterfinalists last year, but he is not in the draw for the ongoing edition of the tournament. The 2025 quarterfinalists will have $20,555 added to their bank accounts, as well as receiving 50 ranking points.
25 points and $11,935 will be given to players who lose in the round of 16 at the 2025 Hong Kong Open. No ranking points are awarded to those who lose in the opening round, but $7,295 is still guaranteed.
The tournament in Hong Kong is one part of an action-packed opening week of the new season. It promises to be an enjoyable and entertaining opening month, including the year's opening Grand Slam at the Australian Open.
