The 2025 Guadalajara Open is scheduled for the week after the 2025 US Open, from September 8th to 14th, and its entry list has been unveiled.
In 2022 and 2023, the Guadalajara Open was a 1000-level tournament because of the impact of China's strict coronavirus restrictions. Jessica Pegula and Maria Sakkari won those iterations in Mexico.
The 2023 edition generated attention for most of the top players withdrawing. Although Sakkari's achievement of winning a 1000-level title should not be dismissed, the weakened entry list undoubtedly helped her.
Last year, the Guadalajara Open was downgraded to a 500-level event, and it has retained that status for 2025. Magdalena Frech defeated Olivia Gadecki to secure her maiden WTA title in 2024. The defending champion is on this year's entry list.
Unless a higher-ranked player receives a wild card between now and the tournament starting, Emma Navarro will be the No. 1 seed at the Guadalajara Open. The Top four seeds receive byes at WTA 500 events.
After an outstanding 2024, Navarro has not reached the same heights this season. She has lost five of her last six matches, most recently at the 2025 Monterrey Open against the world No. 105, Ella Seidel.
Navarro withdrew from the US Open mixed doubles to take a wild card into the Monterrey Open, but that attempt at finding form did not work. She will try to play well at Flushing Meadows in the women's singles.
Leylah Fernandez also has another chance to perform better at a Mexican tournament after losing in the round of 16 in Monterrey. The Canadian won the 2021 and 2022 iterations, but could not reach those heights this year.
Fernandez has only managed one match victory since a superb run to the 2025 Citi DC Open title a few weeks ago, when she beat Anna Kalinskaya in the final. The tennis she produced in the U.S. capital was her most impressive since reaching the 2021 US Open final.
She also generated attention for publicly revealing her desire to go on a date in Montreal during the 2025 Canadian Open. When asked about it in an interview at the 2025 Cincinnati Open, Fernandez disclosed she had been on two dates with a man.
2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko has struggled with inconsistency at her recent tournaments, failing to win more than one singles match at a tournament since the end of the clay court season a few months ago.
If Ostapenko finds her best tennis, she is undoubtedly among the favorites in Guadalajara. The 28-year-old's incredible run to glory at the 2025 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, including wins against Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, showed what she can do.
Maria Sakkari, who rehired her former coach, Tom Hill, a few months ago, is also on the entry list. The two share a close bond, and she seems much more content since he returned to her team.
Anna Kalinskaya, Elise Mertens, Tatjana Maria, Peyton Stearns, and Alycia Parks are among the other players on the Guadalajara Open entry list. Those names should prevent post-US Open fatigue and keep fans engaged.
