Jannik Sinner spoke about his health ahead of his first-round match at the 2025 US Open, following a Cincinnati Open scare.
Sinner retired from the Cincinnati Open final after just 20 minutes. It was supposed to be a battle with his rival, Carlos Alcaraz, but instead, the Italian player had to give up the fight after only a few minutes.
He then didn't touch a tennis court until Thursday, and his condition heading into the US Open has been questioned. Now, the ATP World No. 1 player provided an update about his health during his pre-tournament press conference.
Naturally, Sinner started talking about his condition even before being asked, saying he has used the past few days to recover from the virus that got the better of him in Cincinnati.
"First, I'm very happy to be back here. It's a great tournament, it's obviously the last Grand Slam we have. The motivations are very high. Physically, I feel good. I have recovered mostly, not at 100% yet, but we are aiming to be there in a couple of days, so it should be all fine for the tournament, and I'm very happy to be back here."
Sinner was immediately asked to provide more details about his physical condition and how he recovered from the virus. The Italian player didn't want to talk too much in detail about that, saying there wasn't anything special he did to recover.
"Nothing. It was a virus that some other players also had. Just sleeping and recovering, nothing crazy."

Sinner is the favorite to reach the US Open final again

Sinner's first-round opponent at Flushing Meadows will be Vit Kopriva, who doesn't have too much experience with Grand Slam tennis. In fact, it will be only the fifth major appearance for the Czech player.
Naturally, as the top seed, Sinner is the No. 1 favorite in his half of the draw to make it to the final. The most challenging opponents he could encounter are the likes of Jack Draper and Alexander Zverev, who he could meet in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, respectively.
As a champion of the last three hard-court Grand Slams, however, Sinner has many reasons to be confident in his abilities, and he seems to be, never showing any doubt during his pre-tournament press conference, despite having to deal with a virus recently.
"I feel different than last year. Last year was a much more stressful situation, it was difficult to handle everything. I'm still young. We are focusing on the hard work again, and trying to get better as an athlete at the moment."
"We're heading towards the end of the season, so some players are tired, some players are feeling different. It also the last big trophy of the year, and I feel like here, the conditions can change a lot if you play during a day or during the night, and there are many small things that make this Grand Slam different."
