The
ATP's Asian swing will begin on September 15th with two tournaments. One of these is the 2025
Hangzhou Open, and many notable names are on the
entry list.
Last year's Hangzhou Open was the tournament's maiden iteration. It proved successful enough for the ATP 250 event to be added to the 2025 schedule, running simultaneously with the 2025 Chengdu Open.
Marin Cilic won the 2024 Hangzhou Open,
becoming the lowest-ranked man in ATP history to secure a title. He had been sidelined for a few years with a chronic knee problem, returning a couple of months before his stunning success in Hangzhou.
Cilic is on this year's entry list. Hopefully, the 2014 US Open winner is fit and ready to defend his title. He has not played since losing in the 2025 Wimbledon fourth round because of an injury flare-up.
The quality of the 2025 entry list in Hangzhou means winning the title would be a significant accomplishment for whichever man achieves it. There are many possible contenders, and choosing a favorite is tough.
Daniil Medvedev's quest for a first title in over two years will continue in Hangzhou, unless he wins the 2025 US Open. The 2021 champion at Flushing Meadows is not among the favorites to do that because of his form in the last 18 months.
Since losing the 2024 Australian Open final to Jannik Sinner from two sets up, Medvedev has not been the same player. His last title was at the 2023 Italian Open, his sole tournament victory on clay.
Although the strong entry list makes it difficult, an ATP 250 tournament on a hard court probably represents Medvedev's best chance of ending his title drought, which currently stands at 27 months.
Medvedev recently made headlines for complaining about the calendar, and
has not ruled out boycotting matches unless changes are made, something the ATP might be worried about in case other players threaten the same.
Andrey Rublev, a close friend of Medvedev's, is also on the entry list. The ten-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist has endured an inconsistent season, but did win the 2025 Qatar Open in February.
If the conditions in Hangzhou are similar to last year, they should suit Rublev's game. He also played well in recent quarterfinal runs at the 2025 Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open, possibly indicating that more consistent results are incoming.
Despite being on the entry list,
Matteo Berrettini's participation is uncertain. The 2021 Wimbledon runner-up has only played one match since the 2025 Italian Open in May and
withdrew from the US Open with an injury.
Alexander Bublik signing up for a tournament almost always ensures entertainment because of his mercurial style. The Hangzhou Open organizers were undoubtedly thrilled when this year's surprise French Open quarterfinalist agreed to participate in the event's second iteration.
Recent Canadian Open runner-up Karen Khachanov, Roberto Bautista Agut, David Goffin, Tomas Martin Etcheverry, and Adrian Mannarino are among the players committed to playing at the 2025 Hangzhou Open. Hopefully, the tournament will live up to expectations.
