The 2025 Sao Paulo Open, a new
WTA Tournament, will debut from September 8th to 14th, and the
entry list for it has been released.
For years, many WTA fans noted the lack of South American tournaments on the calendar. That contrasts with the ATP's golden swing, which lasts three weeks and consists of the Argentina Open, Rio Open, and Chile Open.
Brazilian fans, known for being among the loudest and most impressive fans worldwide, will finally get the opportunity to show their outstanding passion for tennis at the Sao Paulo Open next month.
Joao Fonseca receives extraordinary support from Brazilians wherever he plays. The teenager's electrifying style makes him a broad fan favorite anyway, but those from his home country give him unique backing.
Beatriz Haddad Maia has also been vociferously supported at tournaments. The atmospheres in her Billie Jean King Cup matches played in Brazil were among the loudest and most impressive seen at any women's contest in recent years.
Unsurprisingly, Haddad Maia is on the Sao Paulo Open entry list. WTA 250 tournaments often struggle to attract players of her caliber, but competing in front of her home fans outside the Billie Jean King Cup for the first time is something she could not turn down.
Haddad Maia enters the 2025 US Open on a four-match losing streak after defeats at Wimbledon, the Canadian Open, Cincinnati Open, and the Monterrey Open, continuing her challenging season.
The 2023 French Open semifinalist went on a seven-match losing streak after the 2025 Australian Open before stabilizing things somewhat during the clay and grass seasons. Her best effort this year was reaching the semifinal in Strasbourg.
Although all players in the Sao Paulo Open entry list deserve respect and cannot be taken lightly, the tournament represents Haddad Maia's best chance of winning a title in 2025. She will have terrific support and is the only current Top 50 player who signed up.
Rising star Alexandra Eala, assuming she does not pull off a huge shock by winning the US Open, will attempt to secure a maiden WTA title in Sao Paulo. The 20-year-old Filipina is already establishing herself as a fan favorite.
Eala came within inches of winning her first WTA crown at the 2025 Eastbourne Open in June.
After a titanic tussle with fellow young star Maya Joint, Eala lost the deciding set tiebreak 10-12 despite playing superb tennis.
Two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist
Ajla Tomljanovic is another notable name on the entry list. Although not in her prime anymore, the Australian remains a formidable opponent who could challenge for the WTA 250 event.
Hailey Baptiste will also be among the title favorites. She generated attention by progressing to the fourth round of the 2025 French Open, a run that included an opening-round victory against Haddad Maia.
Renata Zarazua, Francesca Jones, Leolia Jeanjean, Panna Udvardy, and Jodie Burrage, who
played Coco Gauff at this year's Australian Open, are among the other players on the Sao Paulo Open entry list.
