Although the 2025 US Open has not begun yet, players are already making plans for afterward. Several high-profile
ATP players have signed up for the 2025
Chengdu Open.
Founded in 2016, the Chengdu Open has had six previous iterations (it was not played from 2020 until 2022 because of China's strict Coronavirus lockdown restrictions), and much terrific tennis has been played.
Most Chengdu Open finals have been epic battles. In 2016, Karen Khachanov beat Albert Ramos Vinolas 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, and Bernard Tomic and Pablo Carreno Busta won the 2018 and 2019 titles with deciding set tiebreak triumphs in the final.
Alexander Zverev claimed the 2023 title by winning his final against Roman Safiullin by the same scoreline as Khachanov did seven years previously.
Shang Juncheng's overcoming Lorenzo Musetti 7-6, 6-1 last year broke the trend of close finals.
The 2025 Chengdu Open is scheduled from September 15th to 21st, one week after the US Open ends. It will occur simultaneously with the 2025 Hangzhou Open and the 2025 Laver Cup in San Francisco.
Jack Draper is currently the highest-ranked player on the
entry list. The Briton reached a career-high ranking of world No. 4 earlier this year after an outstanding season that included
winning the 2025 Indian Wells Open.
He became known to broader sports fans by reaching the semifinal of last year's US Open, falling to the eventual champion Jannik Sinner. That run proved beyond any reasonable doubt that he can compete at the highest level.
Draper is a three-time title winner, securing his first at the 2024 Stuttgart Open on grass. An ATP 250 tournament like in Chengdu, where he is likely to be the top seed, represents a great opportunity for him to win a fourth crown.
Musetti will be among the favorites to triumph in Chengdu again. Although getting to last year's final was an impressive achievement, he must have been incredibly disappointed to lose against Shang since he started as the favorite.
The Italian has struggled for form since the French Open. He reached the semifinal in Paris, retiring against Carlos Alcaraz with an injury, but has only managed one victory in five matches since that physical setback at Roland Garros.
Musetti hopes to find form at the US Open. Although the 23-year-old is not among the favorites at Flushing Meadows, he could slip under the radar and have a good run if he finds his form from the clay court swing.
Gael Monfils's inclusion is always good news for tournament organizers. He will be 39 when the Chengdu Open begins, but remains among the most popular players because of his electrifying style.
Tallon Griekspoor is another notable name on the entry list. He has become known for epic battles with Zverev when they meet and for having a game filled with variety that entertains fans.
Cameron Norrie, Lorenzo Sonego, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Brandon Nakashima, Sebastian Baez, and Nuno Borges are among the other players on the 2025 Chengdu Open entry list. It should be a superb tournament.
