The 2025 European Open will be the tournament's first iteration in Brussels, and the entry list for next month's indoor hard court event, scheduled from October 13th to 19th, has been unveiled.
First played in 2016, the previous nine iterations were held in Antwerp. French tennis legend Richard Gasquet, now retired after emotionally bowing out at the 2025 French Open, won the first European Open.
Jannik Sinner, whose doping suspension was brought back into the headlines after comments by Bjorn Borg, Andy Murray, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are among the tournament's other former winners.
The organizers decided to move the event to the Brussels Expo, which is the primary event complex in Belgium's capital city. Hopefully, it proves the right decision and many fans attend the ATP 250 tournament.
Felix Auger-Aliassime has fond memories of the European Open. The Canadian won the 2022 title in Antwerp, defeating Sebastian Korda. That was one of three titles he won during October of that year. The Florence Open and Swiss Indoors in Basel were the other two.
Auger-Aliassime's form during that period was probably the best of his career. When at that level, he is undoubtedly one of the most formidable hard-court players worldwide. Six of his seven ATP titles have come indoors.
The 25-year-old will hope he builds on his momentum from the North American swing in Asia before the European Open begins. He was a semifinalist at the US Open and a quarterfinalist at the Cincinnati Open.
Frances Tiafoe has been less successful at indoor tournaments. His 2021 Vienna Open loss to Alexander Zverev is the American's only appearance in an indoor final despite making ten finals overall.
The two-time US Open semifinalist hopes to change that record with a strong performance in Brussels. Tiafoe has endured a mostly challenging season, and time is running out for him to win his first title of 2025.
Lorenzo Musetti is the highest-ranked player on the entry list. The Italian's ranking is mostly due to his superb clay-court swing. He lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the 2025 Monte-Carlo Masters final and also made semifinal appearances in Madrid, Rome, and Roland Garros.
Musetti's results since have not matched those heights, but he did have a solid run to the US Open quarterfinals. He is among the most fluid and elegant players in the game, and his presence in Brussels is welcome.
Teenage prodigy Joao Fonseca is another man to watch out for in Brussels. Although still inconsistent and needing to make many improvements, the Brazilian has been tipped by many for future greatness.
Indoor courts probably do not suit him as well as outdoor clay or hard courts, but he remains capable of causing damage in most conditions. His forehand is already among the most powerful shots in the game and often draws visible gasps from crowds.
Jiri Lehecka, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Benjamin Bonzi, Roberto Bautista Agut, and Jaume Munar are some of the other names on the European Open entry list. The Almaty Open and the Stockholm Open are the other tournaments scheduled during that week.
