The
ATP's final tournament of the Asian swing will occur at the 2025
Almaty Open in Kazakhstan from October 13th to 19th. An exciting
entry list has been announced.
In 2020, the ATP Tour was struggling to fill the calendar because of tournaments that were canceled during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Almaty Open helped to solve that issue, with John Millman winning the first iteration five years ago.
Successful editions in 2020 and 2021 in Astana led to the event being given 500-level status in 2022. That enticed Novak Djokovic to play, and the tennis legend defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas to win the title.
The tournament reverted to 250-level in 2023 after COVID-19 restrictions were eased in China, and it moved to Almaty last year. In 2024,
Karen Khachanov overcame Gabriel Diallo in an entertaining three-set final.
Unless a wild card is announced between now and the tournament's start date, Khachanov will defend his Almaty title as the No. 1 seed. He thrived in the conditions almost a year ago, and toppling him will be challenging for the other players.
Khachanov's results this season include losing the 2025 Canadian Open final to Ben Shelton. That final was
interrupted by the crowd celebrating when news of Victoria Mboko winning the title in Montreal filtered through.
Daniil Medvedev's new era will continue in Almaty. The 2021 US Open winner parted ways with Gilles Cervara after this year's iteration at Flushing Meadows. Their eight-year partnership had been one of the lengthiest in the sport until the split.
Medvedev hired Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke as Cervara's replacements. His first tournament appearance under their guidance is at the 2025 Hangzhou Open, another ATP 250 event.
Some have written off Medvedev's hopes of winning another Grand Slam after his terrible 2025 and Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner's dominance in the last two years. The 29-year-old will try to prove them wrong.
Alexander Bublik will bring his flamboyant style to the Almaty Open. The Kazakhstani has unexpectedly enjoyed his best success this season on clay, reaching the French Open quarterfinal and winning back-to-back titles at the 2025 Swiss Open in Gstaad and the 2025 Kitzbuhel Open.
However, Bublik's game is dangerous in any conditions when he performs near his best. He showed that by beating Jannik Sinner at the 2025 Halle Open before going on to win the title, defeating Medvedev in the final.
Diallo, last year's runner-up, also plans to compete again in Almaty. His first ATP final was a breakthrough moment, and he has gotten even better since, including securing a maiden title at the 2025 Libema Open.
Alex Michelsen is among the most talented young American players. The 21-year-old has yet to find the consistency necessary to get nearer the top, but if he plays his best tennis, he could challenge for the Almaty Open title.
Brandon Nakashima, Flavio Cobolli, Luciano Darderi,
Jordan Thompson, and Corentin Moutet are among the other players on the Almaty Open entry list. The players and organizers will try to end the Asian swing with a bang.
