The women's singles draw for the 2025 Australian Open has been released, and the top favorites were certainly not happy to learn it.
In the past two seasons, Aryna Sabalenka always left Melbourne with a Grand Slam trophy in her bag. In 2025, she will attempt to complete a rare three-peat, something only Margaret Court, Evonne Goolagong, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, and Martina Hingis managed to do in Melbourne.
It hasn't been done in over 25 years, and Sabalenka's path to the historic three-peat will be far from easy. Already in the first round of the tournament, the Belarusian player will take on fellow former Grand Slam champion Sloane Stephens.
Stephens might not be playing her best tennis at the moment, but she dismissed the idea of retiring, and with her having a Grand Slam title to her name, the American player will undoubtedly be a real threat to the top seed in the first round.
Coco Gauff is named as one of the top two favorites by many analysts. Some even claim her to be the top favorite after her recent win over Iga Swiatek at the 2025 United Cup.
But Gauff, too, will play against a fellow former Grand Slam champion in the first round of the tournament. The 20-year-old American will take on Sofia Kenin, a player who has already beaten her in the first round of a Grand Slam before.
In 2023, the two met in the first round of the Wimbledon Championships, with Kenin winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. She also has a winning H2H record against Gauff, beating her twice in three meetings.
The WTA World No. 2 Iga Swiatek also has a challenging draw, even though not immediately in the first round. Katerina Siniakova is an experienced player and a doubles World No. 1 player, but she will be an outsider against the Pole in the first round.
But already in the third round, it might get very interesting for Swiatek. If she makes it to that stage, the five-time major winner will take on either the winner of the match between the 26th-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova and another unseeded Grand Slam winner, Emma Raducanu, or possibly Amanda Anisimova.
The sixth-seeded Elena Rybakina will be among the top favorites, too, and her draw looks the best out of all top players, even though she will face some of the most talented young players in the sport.
In the first round, her opponent will be 16-year-old Emerson Jones, and should she succeed, her second-round opponent will be either 17-year-old Iva Jovic or Nuria Parrizas Diaz.
There are also some first-round blockbusters awaiting fans in Melbourne. For example, Naomi Osaka will play against Caroline Garcia, and Jelena Ostapenko will meet returning Belinda Bencic.
Once again, the draw for the opening Grand Slam of the season didn't disappoint, even though the top favorites won't be happy when looking at it.
