The 2025 Australian Open will run from January 12th until 26th, and the men's singles draw for the event has been unveiled.
Traditionally, the excitement for a Grand Slam tournament builds already in the week before its start. At the Australian Open, it's called the AO Opening Week, during which the qualifying matches are played, but also multiple exhibitions, such as the one in which Carlos Alcaraz lost to home player Alex de Minaur.
Another wave of excitement comes with the draw, and this year's Australian Open draw certainly delivered, as it features plenty of exciting matchups. Jannik Sinner will be the defending champion and the top seed after winning the title in 2024.
This year, his draw in the first round is very challenging. The Italian player drew Nicolas Jarry, who is the ATP World No. 35, which means that he's the third-highest unseeded player in the draw, so statistically, the third hardest opponent out of 96 players Sinner could have drawn.
One thing the ATP World No. 1 player will be happy about, though, is the fact that he avoided Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and also Nick Kyrgios in his part of the draw, as they all appeared in the bottom part of the 2025 Australian Open draw.
In fact, Alcaraz and Djokovic can meet already in the quarter-finals of the tournament, and neither of them has an easy draw either. The seventh-seeded Djokovic will start against Nishesh Basavareddy, who has been showing a lot of promise in recent weeks.
Only hours before the Australian Open draw was made, Basavareddy secured the 2025 ASB Classic semi-final after beating Alex Michelsen. Alcaraz, on the other hand, will start against always dangerous Alexander Shevchenko.
Kyrgios, whose participation is in doubt after a recent injury, landed in the part of the second-seeded Alexander Zverev. The German player will start against Lucas Pouille, while Kyrgios will play against Jacob Fearnley in the first round. If they both succeed in the first two rounds, they will meet in the third round.
Taylor Fritz is the fourth seed, and he will be coming to Melbourne after winning the United Cup with Team USA. But the draw wasn't nice to him either, as he will start against fellow compatriot Jenson Brooksby, who is a former ATP World No. 33 player.
The 21st-seeded Ben Shelton also drew fellow American. He will start against Brandon Nakashima, so both he and Fritz will be under threat already in the first round of the tournament.
There are plenty of exciting first-round matches in the 2025 Australian Open draw. For example, Matteo Berrettini will take on Cameron Norrie. The 13th-seeded Holger Rune will play against Zhizhen Zhang, and the 11th-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas will meet Alex Michelsen.
And those are only matchups from the top quarter of the draw. The 10th-seeded Grigor Dimitrov will play against Fabio Fognini, while former champion Stan Wawrinka will play against Lorenzo Sonego.
One player that can be certainly happy about his draw is Daniil Medvedev. The fifth seed traveled to Melbourne much later than the rest of his opponent, as he and his wife welcomed their second child shortly ahead of the first Grand Slam of the season.
His opponents, therefore, have a significant advantage over him, as they've been training in Australia for a week before he even arrived. But the draw made up for that, as Medvedev will start against wild card Kasidit Samrej, who is ranked 414th in the world.
Should the Russian player succeed, he will play against either Camilo Ugo Carbelli or one of the qualifiers. In the 2025 Australian Open men's singles draw, the announced qualifier spots are a bit more feared compared to other tournaments.
One of the qualifiers will be 18-year-old Joao Fonseca, who recently won the Next Gen ATP Finals, and he's on a 13-match winning streak coming into the main draw, also having won an ATP Challenger event in Canberra to start the season.
