Stefanos Tsitsipas will compete at the 2022 Mallorca Championships after he was granted a late wild card into the tournament.
Main draw action at the last grass-court tournament before Wimbledon will take place on the Spanish island from June 19th, and Tsitsipas will make his debut appearance at the ATP 250 event.
Tsitsipas is not known for his grass-court prowess, but he is doing everything within his capability to excel on the surface. He prefers the slower hard courts and clay because he can get more time to execute his shots and defend his usually fragile backhand.
He has not won a title on grass, and if he does it in Mallorca, it would be a valuable experience. He will be confident of doing well at Wimbledon, the one Grand Slam tournament where the Greek doesn't rank highly in the list of favorites.
Tsitsipas wants to travel to London later this month in the best possible shape, confidence-wise, which explains why he is playing in his third grass-court tournament this year. He feels he needs more minutes on the surface to refine his game.
After losing in the round of 16 of the French Open, he went to Stuttgart to begin preparations on grass, where he won a match but lost to Andy Murray in the quarterfinal. Tsitsipas also played in Halle, where he failed to win back-to-back matches after losing to Nick Kyrgios in the second round.
Now, he'll play for the third consecutive week on grass, but it won't be a problem for him as he has had plenty of rest time between events due to not going deep in the draws.
The 23-year-old will join an already strong field that includes defending champion Daniil Medvedev as the top seed. The field also includes Hubert Hurkacz, Denis Shapovalov, Pablo Carreno Busta, and Roberto Bautista Agut.
