Nick Kyrgios defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round of the 2022 Halle Open, and after the match, he praised his Greek opponent but was critical of himself.
It was the third win in four matches for the Australian player against Tsitsipas. Overall, he improved his record to 17-16 against the current Top 10 and will play in the quarter-finals at the 2022 Halle Open.
Kyrgios was the better player against Tsitsipas, beating him in three sets. He won the match 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, and after the win, he had words of praise for his opponent, but also some not so nice words for himself.
Despite winning the doubles title at the 2022 Australian Open, Kyrgios believes that he might not win many Grand Slam tournaments during his career.
"Stef is one of the best players in the world at the moment and he’s going to have some amazing results and I’m sure many, many Grand Slams. I don’t know if I can say the same for me, but I’m happy to still be able to produce this level with the tournaments I play. It is a testament to how hard I do work when I’m not playing."
In the next round, Kyrgios will play against experienced Pablo Carreno-Busta. After losing in the semi-finals of the 2022 Stuttgart Open to Andy Murray last week, he will try to lift the trophy in another German city this week and boost his confidence ahead of the third Grand Slam of the season.
After his win over Tsitsipas, he was not so much excited about the result itself, but about how he was able to perform.
"I’m just super excited to move on as well, I want to keep having these big wins on the best courts in the world. I'm excited. I’m going to try and see what I can do, bump a couple of returns and serve big, and see how it goes."
