"I can play but he can't" - Sandgren on Djokovic not playing US Open

Novak Djokovic likely won't play at the US Open and it's not for a lack of trying as the US Government won't amend its policy on entering the country.

That's only half the story though as technically Djokovic could play at the event if the US Open elected to apply for a special exemption for him with the US Government. Reports from America suggest that the event won't do such a thing and will closely follow government policy practically shutting any hope of Djokovic playing in New York down.

The only way he could play now is if he gets vaccinated which seems very unlikely or if the government allows unvaccinated individuals to enter the country which also seems unlikely. The pandemic is still going on and there have been spikes in cases in the US recently as well. Another player who refused the vaccine is Tennys Sandgren and he took to social media to express his disbelief about the reports.

"Pretty shameful that the USTA won’t fight for an exemption for Novak. No surprise the government hasn’t changed it's archaic policy. I can play but he can’t? Ridiculous."

Tennys Sandgren

Sandgren makes an interesting point that he can play the US Open despite being unvaccinated but Djokovic can't. Playing at the event is not a problem for Djokovic, it's entering the country legally in accordance with the laws that is.
