It's been more than five years since Andy Murray was seeded at a Grand Slam tournament, but this year, the British player can reach his goal and be seeded at the 2022 US Open.
The last time Murray was seeded at a Grand Slam tournament, many current Top 10 players weren't even in the Top 100 of the ATP Rankings. At the 2017 Wimbledon Championships, the British player was the first seed and lost in the quarter-finals.
He was then supposed to enter the 2017 US Open as the second seed but didn't enter the tournament due to an injury. Five years later, he is learning how to have the best results with a metal hip and became a solid part of the Top 100 of the ATP Rankings.
A few weeks ago, Murray expressed his desire to be seeded at Grand Slam tournaments and he might achieve that already at this year's US Open.
Currently, Murray is ranked 52nd and misses just 20 spots to be ranked inside of the Top 32. That is a crucial number, as the first 32 players are seeded for Grand Slam tournaments. In many instances, even players ranked lower appear among the seeds, as withdrawals impact the seeding spots.
If Murray succeeds and wins the tournament in Newport, where he competes right now, he will move to 33rd place in the ATP Rankings, and he would be only one spot from being seeded.
However, if he doesn't win, his chances are still very high. He didn't play at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Canada last year and won only one match in Cincinnati.
On the other hand, some of his opponents who are ranked above him defend quite a lot of points, so if the Brit gets at least into the quarter-finals in Montreal or Cincinnati, he should seal his spot as one of the Top 32 players.
