Andrey Rublev defeated Casper Ruud in the Bastad Open final, as the two shared some friendly banter during the trophy ceremony.

Casper Ruud and Andrey Rublev contested the Bastad Open final on Sunday and it was the Russian who emerged victorious. He played a really solid match from start to finish beating Ruud comfortably in two sets. Despite losing the second set 6-0, Ruud proved gracious as ever in the defeat and complimented Rublev on his achievements.

He snuck a little bit of banter in though Rublev made it possible for him as the Russian showed his humbleness by admitting that he just hit all the lines which was the reason why he won. Ruud took that layup to sneak in a joke during his speech.

Today, I hit all the possible lines, all the possible frames, and everything went inside [the lines]. In the second set, sometimes I was thinking that I was closing my eyes and I was shooting, and still, the ball was going in.

Rublev after the match

You're a very tough competitor, but also a very nice guy, very funny, and always respectful to your opponents even though you hit all the f*ing lines today!

He also joked that his opponent ‘walked on water’ further showing the friendly relationship between the two ATP Top 10 players.

Thanks to everyone for yet another fantastic week in Bastad. Always the warmest atmosphere. Hopefully next year my opponent will not walk on water and I can hold the trophy again. Congrats to Andrey and his team for a great week and run. Now Hamburg!
