ATP Race Update: Djokovic Targets Late Push To Topple Sinner And Alcaraz

ATP Race Update: Djokovic Targets Late Push To Topple Sinner And Alcaraz

by Nurein Ahmed

There were no significant changes at the top of this week's ATP Race to Turin, but the stage is set for a thrilling finish in the second half of the season.

So far, three of the four Grand Slams and half of the Masters 1000s have been played. Most of the big titles have been shared by the top three players in the race, namely Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Alexander Zverev.

Sinner accounts for a maiden Grand Slam at the Australian Open and the Miami Open. Alcaraz completed successful title defenses in the Indian Wells Open and Wimbledon.

The Spaniard also became the sixth man in the Open Era to win back-to-back French Open and Wimbledon in the same season. With his second victory over Novak Djokovic at the All England Club, Alcaraz reduced Sinner's lead at the top of the race.

The Italian has accumulated 6200 pints and should seal his qualification at the ATP Finals in the next few weeks. Alcaraz is not a distant second, as he has 5950 points, and they will both have a chance to add to their tallies after the Olympics when they resume in North America in early August.

Zverev, who captured the Italian Open, had 5115 points. Casper Ruud could not reduce the gap to fourth-placed Daniil Medvedev after losing early in Bastad. The Russian, like most of the top players, took a rare week off.

Djokovic moved into the Top 10 following his runner-up finish at Wimbledon. The Serb climbed up to sixth spot with 3160 points. That's nearly half the number of points to Sinner at the top.

The former World No. 1 has topped the year-end race a record eight times, including in 2023. He can take inspiration from the fact that he was the year-end No. 1 in 2018 despite a difficult start to the season.

That year, he won his first title of the season in July. At the moment, he's in the midst of his worst trophyless start to a season since 2005, when he had yet to win a single title.

Alex de Minaur is attempting to qualify for the ATP Finals for the first time. He's currently in the qualifying spots (7th) and ranks ahead of Stefanos Tsitsipas, who lost in the semifinal of the Gstaad Open.

Taylor Fritz pips fellow American Tommy Paul to ninth place, and it will be interesting to see who finishes the season as the American No. 1. Grigor Dimitrov (11th) and Andrey Rublev (12th) were inside the Top 10 but have lost ground in recent weeks.

Rublev can re-enter the upper elite if he wins the title in Umag this week. Hubert Hurkacz (13th) is currently nursing a knee injury and is expected to be out for a while. Lorenzo Musetti and Alejandro Tabilo can get closer to him in the race.

20-year-old Arthur Fils is now a member of the Top 20 after winning the biggest ATP title of his career in Hamburg. Fils garnered the full 500 points to rise to a high of 19th and is not far away from eclipsing Ugo Humbert as the top-performing Frenchman.
