Andy Murray vs Benoit Paire: 2024 Montpellier Open - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Andy Murray will compete at the 2024 Montpellier Open, and he'll face Benoit Paire in the opening round of the tournament.

The main talk about the Brit in recent weeks has been whether he'll retire or not, as he's been struggling a lot with his play on the tennis courts. The former world no. 1 has been struggling a lot, and his results prove that as he's lost all of his most recent matches.

Playing Down Under wasn't particularly good for Murray, but a return indoor might create a bit of a spark because it kind of fits his style. He can use his serve to create some pressure and grind things out.

Benoit Paire is an ideal opponent in that regard because he almost certainly won't try as hard as Murray will.

Head-to-head:

Despite both of them competing on the ATP Tour for a very long time, they actually only played three times. Murray won all three matches, which isn't a surprise because he spent much of his career among the Top 10. The most recent match came in 2021 at the Queen's Club, and Murray won in straight sets.

Prediction:

The same thing will likely happen in this match, too. Murray is desperate for a win, and even if Paire does his best in this match, he may have enough to win at this point in his career.

Murray will be dialed in in all rallies, while Paire may find himself absent in a couple of games. Those games will be enough to ruin him, so Murray will likely win this first-round match easily in two sets, unless the Frenchman finds an inspired play.

Prediction: Andy Murray to win in two sets.
