Alexander Zverev vs Taylor Fritz: 2024 Italian Open Rome - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz will meet in a match, which will decide about one spot in the 2024 Italian Open semi-final.

The draw at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Rome was quite thinned out recently, so these two are among the top contenders who could win the event. Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, and Daniil Medvedev are no longer in the field, so it's on Zverev, Fritz, or Stefanos Tsisipas to get it done.

Unfortunately for some tennis fans, this match will eliminate one of the first two. The American has been looking pretty solid since the Madrid Open, consistently winning matches.

On the other hand, the German player hasn't had a special clay season so far, but he grew up on the surface and can play very well on it, and he's also been pretty solid this week.

Head-to-head:

The matchup so far has mostly favored Zverev but only barely. They have played 7 matches so far, and Zverev leads the H2H 4-3, which isn't that huge of a difference. None of the matches were played on clay, either, but we can safely say that Zverev is the better player on clay despite the recent results.

The most recent meeting was last year at the United Cup, which Fritz won easily. Most of the matches, though, were played a while ago, and many things have changed since then. Fritz became a better player, but so did Zverev. He's back to a high level after his ankle injury.

Alexander Zverev Taylor Fritz
4 H2H 3
5 Rank 13
27 Age 26
25-9 2024 W/L 22-8
419-186 Career W/L 253-175

Prediction:

Zverev is the favorite in this match, mostly because he is the better player on clay. Form-wise, Fritz is probably a bit ahead, and the American can certainly challenge his opponent in this match.

Still, winning the match will be difficult, but Fritz can certainly win at least a set against Zverev, who will be still the favorite to win simply because of his history on clay.

Prediction: Alexander Zverev to win in three sets.
