The 2024 Moselle Open in Metz takes place the week before this year's ATP Finals, and the entry list has been unveiled.
Former Australian Open runner-up Arnaud Clement won the first iteration of the Moselle Open in 2003. He overcame fellow runner-up in Melbourne Fernando Gonzalez 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in the final.
Novak Djokovic won the second ATP title of his career in Metz in 2006. The Serbian recovered from a set down against Jurgen Melzer, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to record one of the earliest triumphs of his illustrious career.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Ivan Ljubicic, Hubert Hurkacz, Tommy Robredo, and David Goffin are some of the other men who have won the title in the past. Andy Murray and Richard Gasquet, who became the third-oldest Challenger Tour champion ever, have been runner-up in the past.
Ugo Humbert is the defending champion. His run to the title last year was particularly emotional because Humbert is not only French but was born in Metz. That made his victory the most special for the locals in the tournament's history.
Unsurprisingly, Humbert will return to his home tournament to defend his title this year from November 3rd to 9th. He is the third highest-ranked player on the entry list, and other players could find it difficult to stop him in front of his adoring fans in Metz.
Humbert also showed how high his best level is at the recent Japan Open in Tokyo. The Frenchman progressed all the way to the final in the Japanese capital before narrowly missing out on the title to his compatriot Arthur Fils.
Casper Ruud is the top-ranked player on the 2024 Moselle Open entry list. The three-time Grand Slam runner-up is one of the players trying to book his spot at the ATP Finals. Possibly needing more points to do that is likely why he signed up for the event in Metz.
The Norwegian's hopes were damaged when he lost in the round of 64 at the Shanghai Masters to Aleksandar Vukic. He is currently sixth in the race to qualify for the ATP Finals, although he could drop by the end of the Shanghai Masters. Eight players qualify for the year-end tournament.
Holger Rune, who Ruud has had some heated battles against in the past, is the second highest-ranked player on the 2024 Moselle Open entry list. The Dane's last match was a 1-6, 2-6 hammering by Taylor Fritz in Shanghai.
Rune's chances of qualifying for the ATP Finals are as good as over after that defeat. He is currently 15th in the race, one place behind Frances Tiafoe, who caused controversy for his aggressive rant at an umpire at the Shanghai Masters.
Felix Auger-Aliassime could be one of the most dangerous players on the entry list. All five of the Canadian's ATP titles came at indoor tournaments, showing he is one of the best indoor players in the world at his best.
Matteo Berrettini, the 2021 Wimbledon runner-up, is also on the entry list. He lost to Rune in three sets in Shanghai and will hope for a better run at the ATP-250 event in Metz.
