The draw for the 2023 Indian Wells BNP Paribas Open was released as the first ATP 1000 event of the season is set to begin on March 8th.
The men's event in Indian Wells has been plagued by many withdrawals as Novak Djokovic was forced to withdraw, Rafael Nadal can't compete, and the likes of Nick Kyrgios, Sebastian Korda, and Reilly Opelka also pulled out of the event.
However, the event which is often called the 'fifth Grand Slam' will still be very interesting as the first-seeded Carlos Alcaraz will try to win the title to become the world no. 1. Like all seeded players, he received a bye in the first-round and in the second round, the Spaniard will play against a qualifier or wild card Brandon Holt.
Stefanos Tsitsipas, who played in the 2023 Australian Open final, will face a difficult test in his second-round match. The Greek will meet either Jordan Thompson, or Gael Monfils, who is returning from an injury.
Frances Tiafoe, the no. 14 seed, will meet one of the compatriots as he's set to meet Marcos Giron or Aleksandar Kovacevic. The sixth-seeded Andrey Rublev won't be happy to see his draw. He's set to meet Arthur Rinderknech or talented Jiri Lehecka in the second round, with possible third-round meeting with Denis Shapovalov.
The fifth-seeded Daniil Medvedev will play against John Isner or Brandon Nakashima, while the 12th-seeded Alexander Zverev will meet Nikoloz Basilashvili or Pedro Cachin. Casper Ruud will begin against one of the Argentinians as he'll play against Diego Schwartzman or Federico Coria.
The defending champion, Taylor Fritz, also won't be happy to see his draw. The fourth seed will meet either experienced Fabio Fognini or young and talented Ben Shelton. On the other hand, the seventh-seeded Holger Rune will play against Mackenzie McDonald or Filip Krajinovic.
