The second day of the 2023 Wimbledon Championships is turning into a disaster with multiple ATP & WTA matches cancelled.
The first rounds at Grand Slams are always the most difficult for organizers, who are certainly praying for sunny days in the first week of the majors. However, that's not the case at the 2023 Wimbledon, as Monday and Tuesday were both marked by relentless rain.
On the first day of the main draw, there was some rain, but not enough to cause major damage. The men's defending champion Novak Djokovic had to dry the court himself when waiting for 70 minutes, and Venus Williams had a horrific fall, but other than that, almost all of the matches were completed.
Some had to be moved to Day 2, causing the schedule to be more packed than usual, but it's the persistent rain on Tuesday that is causing even more matches to be moved. The play started as scheduled at 11 AM local time, but only after around an hour, it was stopped on all of the courts at the All England Club.
Two courts that are still used are the Centre Court and the No. 1 Court as those have a roof. Therefore, fans could see Carlos Alcaraz beat Jeremy Chardy in the Frenchman's last match, defending champion Elena Rybakina start with a win over Shelby Rogers, but also Roger Federer enter the royal box.
But there will be numerous players that won't appear on the tennis court on Tuesday with initial 16 and then additional 12 cancellations of matches. The list is very long, and included after the article, but there are also some favourites to make it to the second week that will see their schedule change.
Alexander Zverev won't be able to play his match against Gijs Brouwer on Tuesday, and Daniil Medvedev will also have his match against Arthur Fery rescheduled. Also, the 16-year-old prodigy Mirra Andreeva will have to deal with the unusual situation, as well as the 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu.
Milos Raonic was set for a triumphant comeback, but the Canadian's match against Dennis Novak will be also postponed. Among the notable names, the postponed matches include the meetings between Maria Sakkari and Marta Kostyuk, Paula Badosa and Alison Riske, Frances Tiafoe and Yibing Wu, and also Madison Keys and Sonay Kartal.
