Jessica Pegula had a decent grass season leading up to the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, but her Wimbledon run is over already in the second round.
The American had an interesting preparation for Wimbledon with a rather shocking loss in Den Bosch and then a surprise title run in Berlin, and then another interesting loss to Emma Raducanu in Eastbourne.
The conclusion was that her level was very up and down without any sort of consistency. She had two poor weeks and one excellent week, and the question was what would happen in London.
She started well, comfortably beating tricky Ashlyn Krueger in the opening round. Then she faced Xinyu Wang in the second round of Wimbledon and ran into problems—a lot of problems—the kind of problems that would see her book an early ticket back home to the United States.
The first set was uneventful because it didn't really see many momentum shifts. Both started well and held their serve, but eventually Wang broke the World No. 5 midway through and then won the set 6-4.
The Chinese player was a lot better and more stable in the rallies than Pegula, who couldn't find the court. The American had three winners and 14 unforced errors in that opening set, which is terrible by any metric, especially for a Top 10 player who arrived in pretty decent form in London.
The American's second set was better but also worse in many ways. She took an early 2-0 lead but then lost it. She then took a 4-2 lead but also lost it and then barely held for a 5-4 lead.
Wang eventually broke to take a 6-5 lead but failed to serve it out, so the set had to find its victor in the tie-break, which Pegula won, saving a match point in the process.
Ultimately, it didn't matter because she played the final set horribly, falling behind 0-4, which was too big of a deficit to overturn, as Wang won the match in three sets 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-1
