WATCH: Venus Williams Practices Alongside Sister Serena Ahead Of Singles Return

Venus Williams' preparations for her return to the singles court were assisted by her sister, Serena Williams, who came to practice with her in Washington.

Venus has not played a singles match since losing in the first round of the Chicago Women's Open almost a year ago. Many questioned whether the 42-year-old would ever return to singles action.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion's first matches since the Chicago Women's Open were in the mixed doubles at Wimbledon alongside Jamie Murray. The pair won their opening match before falling in the next round.

Venus was initially expected to return to singles at the Canadian Open. However, she subsequently decided to play at the tournament in Washington before that, much to fans' excitement.

It is difficult to know what to expect from Venus in her first singles appearance in nearly 12 months. Expectations will be lower than usual, but a legend of the sport like her could surprise people.

Her chances of succeeding in Washington may have been boosted by practicing with Serena. Her sister is a 23-time Grand Slam-winning singles champion, meaning hitting with her and gaining insights is undoubtedly valuable.

Serena made her own return to the singles court after a year out at Wimbledon. She narrowly lost a tight battle against Harmony Tan 5-7, 6-1, 6-7 on Centre Court, running out of legs at the end.

In the video below, Venus is serving. The older of the Williams sisters hit a clean backhand, electing to come in behind the shot. She then deliberately hits a soft volley, allowing Serena to practice a passing shot.

Venus is one of several top players competing at the tournament. Making a deep run is likely to be challenging, but the tennis legend will give it her best in front of supportive fans at her home event.
