Iga Swiatek had a humorous moment with a fan after her match against Jessica Pegula at the San Diego Open.
Swiatek is just one victory away from securing another title in 2024 after defeating Pegula 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. She was almost unplayable during an outstanding final two sets that any WTA player would have found hard to stop
The Pole won six of her seven titles so far in 2024 during an incredible 37-match winning streak that lasted from the Qatar Open to the third round of Wimbledon when Alize Cornet ended that run.
Swiatek's other title came at the US Open, where she overcame Ons Jabeur in the final. Her run at Flushing Meadows included a triumph against Pegula in the quarterfinal, who memorably drank a can of Heineken better at a press conference afterward.
The world No. 1 might be even more determined than usual to win the title after losing her first final of the season last week at the Ostrava Open. Barbora Krejcikova inflicted that unexpected loss on Swiatek.
However, Swiatek still showed her class and good nature by donating the prize money she earned for finishing as the runner-up to aid Mental Health Awareness Day. Swiatek has spoken about mental health before.
Swiatek also showed her personality again immediately after the match against Pegula ended. The video below shows that a fan asks the two-time French Open champion for her rackets, but Swiatek is not rattled.
The 21-year-old politely explained that she needed them for the final. Swiatek does this in a friendly and endearing way when many players would have ignored the fan asking this and tried to get off-court as quickly as possible.
Although her abilities on the court are incredible, Swiatek also deserves credit for being a great ambassador for the sport and conducting herself in a positive way for younger players to emulate.
