Being a global superstar means that there will be a lot of difficulty in maintaining a low profile because of unending public attention and scrutiny.
In the case of Coco Gauff, a 19-year-old tennis phenom from Delray Breach, Florida, she has struck a balance between personal space and prominence. As such, Gauff takes control of her private life and explains why only some of what happens behind the curtains goes public.
As she prepares to celebrate her 20th birthday next week, the American was recently in LA, walking the red carpet among the honorees of the 2024 TIME Women Of The Year. She was the only athlete to make it to this distinguished list.
While at the gala, Gauff spoke to the PEOPLE to share her perspective about keeping some aspects of her private life under wraps and allowing her to reveal only some of it. She has witnessed a surge in popularity since winning her first Grand Slam at the 2023 US Open.
"Honestly, it wasn't something I got to set in stone. I think I felt like I just, some parts of myself I love to share and then some parts I think I just keep to myself."
"And I think that's just the beauty of it all, that people still know me and know parts of me, but not everything. So I do feel like my life is a little bit in my hands too."
Gauff is one of the most-followed tennis players on the social media platform Instagram, with 1.6 million followers under her name. Additionally, she is contracted to several multi-million sponsorship deals with major brands on and off the court, making her one of the highest-paid women's tennis players.
Recently, Gauff spilled the beans regarding her relationship status, confirming that she has a boyfriend but did not reveal his identity online, further underlining her decision to keep her private life private.
