Gauff Named In TIME Women Of The Year List For Playing Active Role In Gender Equality

Coco Gauff was recently named one of TIME's Women of the Year in 2024, which recognized the efforts and voices of extraordinary women who are striving for an equal world.

Gauff has taken a leading role as an activist and an advocate in matters related to social justice and women's empowerment. She has often utilized her platform to speak up on issues that are currently facing women's tennis players on tour, like pay inequity, in comparison with ATP players.

She has not shied away from speaking on highly sensitive subjects like the ravaging Israel-Palestine war during her stop to the Middle East. Gauff stated that she was acutely aware of what was happening and prayed for peace in the region.

Being named in TIME's Women of the Year list is a stunning achievement, considering the outspoken American is only 19.

What makes it even more special is that she is the lone athlete in this year's band and features in the same list as some of the prominent women and trailblazers whose activism role has been felt all over the world.

Gauff, who is currently competing at the Dubai Championships and is hunting her last WTA title as a teenager, was honored to be recognized by TIME magazine and spoke of her delight during an on-court interview at the tournament.

"Yeah, I knew about it, I would say last year. So I wasn’t sure when they were gonna announce it. It’s really cool to be on that list, among other amazing women, especially making it so young."

"It means a lot. I’m super grateful for them to choose me. I’m going to the event in March. One of the rare times I get dressed up not in this stuff. I’m really excited, and obviously, thank you to TIME for choosing me. It’s a huge honor."
